Safeguarding Advisers


Alan Davies, Helen Parker and Ed Ronayne are our EMBA Safeguarding Advisers, who manage the Association safeguarding cases in conjunction with the Regional Ministers, who provide pastoral support to churches.

Mr Alan Davies

Alan trained as a social worker/probation officer in 1973 and practiced as a probation officer in Nottinghamshire for 13 years.  He then moved to a post with the NSPCC as a child protection officer where he spent 9 years following this up with 20 years working for the NHS as a clinician in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.  As well as assessing and treating the children referred to the out-patient clinic as part of a multi-disciplinary team, Alan was responsible for a specialism working with children whose sexual behaviour had caused concerns.  He continued working part-time after retirement finally leaving his position in 2015 by which time his clientele was largely drawn from a children’s secure unit.

Mrs Helen Parker

Helen has lived in North Lincolnshire since 1996 and worshipped at Scunthorpe Baptist Church since moving into the area.  Helen helped to run the toddler group and thereafter became a youth leader.  She has also run a house group and since 2010 has been the Designated Person for Safeguarding (DPS).  Helen’s day jobs have evolved since 1997.  She has worked for the local authority since this date in various roles but all involving working directly with or supporting children, young people and vulnerable adults.  Helen is currently the Safeguarding Education Officer for North Lincolnshire Council which involves supporting all schools, colleges and Alternative Provisions in their Safeguarding duties; this also involves being a decision maker at the ‘front door’ of referrals into Social Care.

Mr Ed Ronayne

Following a BA Hon’s degree in Sociology and Psychology, Ed trained and qualified as a Youth and Community Worker.  After becoming a senior manager, he was responsible for Child Protection and became a trainer and advisor both for Wirral Borough Council and Humberside County Council.  For 3 years Ed was Assistant Director and then Director of the Liverpool Archdiocesan Youth Service. During this time, he was involved in writing some of the very first Child Protection policies locally, regionally and nationally for various church denominations.  Ed then moved on to the role of Education Advisor to schools and during this time, qualified as a counsellor and a trainer.  Ed has been a Safeguarding Children’s Manager and trainer for over 20 years and for the last 8 years, has held the role of Safeguarding Adults’ Manager in the NHS in Derbyshire.  This involves him taking the lead for training GPs, nurses, commissioning staff, carers groups and church groups on safeguarding adults.  Ed is also involved with training in domestic abuse, modern slavery and Prevent and delivers ‘Train the Trainer’ courses in safeguarding children/adults and Prevent.  A key part of Ed’s role in the NHS is providing support and advice on a daily basis to health staff on safeguarding issues.
