LENT GATHERING THEME
Steve writes: Lent is strongly associated with the gospel accounts of Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness, where he grapples with what the words spoken at his baptism will mean for him. This theme culminates in the scenes in the Garden of Gethsemane as Jesus absorbs what it will mean for his will to conform to that of his heavenly Father. These stories frame the accounts of Jesus’ active ministry, and we will think about some of the ways they help us understand God’s call on our own lives. In concluding, we will touch on Hebrews 10, the climax of the writer’s theological argument, where the words of Psalm 40 are ascribed to the Son as he says, ‘See, God, I have come to do your will.’ We will reflect on the connections between these passages and what they might mean for discipleship and for ministry.
